Creation of man
We all love something new—a new car, a new home, new appliances, new clothes. Yet we live in a world where things grow old, fall apart, decay and die. The Bible tells us that in the beginning God created everything new—the heavens, the earth, the moon, the sun, the stars, water, land, plants and animals. Then God created His masterpieces—man and woman. Brand new! They were a perfect creation that would not decay, grow old or die. God put Adam and Eve, His new creation, in the Garden of Eden—a place full of beauty and wonder. He provided everything Adam and Eve could ever want or need. God’s purpose was that man should glorify God and enjoy fellowship with Him forever.
Man’s disobedience before God
In the Garden of Eden, God had planted two special trees: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘From any tree of the garden you may eat freely, but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die’” Genesis 2:16,17
God had given man a free will, the ability to make choices, to obey or disobey God. Adam and Eve, after being tempted by Satan, who came to them in the form of a serpent, used their free will by choosing to disobey their Creator. They ate from the forbidden tree. Because of their disobedience, and in keeping with His promise, God punished Adam and Eve. He allowed the sentence of death to come upon the two created beings whom He dearly loved. From that day on, Adam and Eve and all their descendants would grow old and die. God placed a curse upon this earth whereby all things would die—trees, plants, fish, animals and all living things.
God’s punishment for sin
Adam and Eve’s disobedience is called sin. Because of their sin, the entire human race received the nature of sin and the sentence of death. We are all sinners. “As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one” Romans 3:10. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23. All mankind is guilty of breaking God’s law. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” Romans 5:12. Now man was sentenced to die, not just physically, but spiritually. There is an eternal death that comes after physical death, and it is separation from God for all of eternity in a real place called hell. We are all dead in our sins, with no spiritual life in us. Our old sinful nature controls us, condemning us to death. It is impossible for man to save himself. Is there escape from such bondage and punishment? Is there no way for sinful man to get into heaven? How can we be saved?
God’s love for man
The good news is that God loves us, and by His grace we can be forgiven of all our sin and become a new creation in Christ! Because God loves us so much and wants us to spend eternity with Him in heaven, He desires to save us from sin and the sentence of eternal death. But for sinful man to dwell in the presence of a holy God, he would also have to become holy in God’s sight. An impossibility? No! God said there was a way, but only one way.
Someone who was perfect, sinless and holy would have to die and take the punishment for man’s sin. But only God was perfect! The one to die would also have to be human. There was no such person on earth who was both holy and human. Who could do it? Who would do it? Only one person in all the universe could accomplish God’s purpose, and that person was Jesus Christ, God’s Son. Because Jesus was the Son of God, He was also God. He was deity, sinless, perfect, holy. To save man, Jesus had to become a man, and at the perfect time in history, God sent His only Son to this earth to be our Savior. Out of His great love for mankind, God gave the best He had. Jesus became God in flesh. He took on the form of man. Now He could die and receive the punishment for the sins of the world because He was God who was sinless and man who was human. Only man could die for man, but only God who was perfect, could take the sins of the whole world upon Himself. He had to become sin for us. “For He (God) hath made Him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” 2 Corinthians 5:21.
God’s plan of salvation for man
Blood had to be shed, as death was required by God as the only acceptable punishment for sin. So, for a sinner to go free and be forgiven of his sin, someone had to die in his place. That someone was Jesus Christ, God’s Son. He was the only one who could become the acceptable sacrifice for our sin. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” John 3:16. So Jesus Christ, born in a manger, proclaimed through His teachings and miracles who He was and why He came. He was sentenced to death on a cross by those who did not believe He was God’s Son. But He was not placed upon that cross by force, though from the human perspective it seemed so. Because of His great love for us He put Himself upon that cross. He willingly laid down His life for you and for me. “Who gave Himself a ransom for all” 1 Timothy 2:6. Only by the precious blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross of Calvary, can our sins be washed away, forgiven. “In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” Ephesians 1:7 “The Blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son cleanseth us from all sin” I John 1:7. On the cross Jesus took our sins upon Himself, dying in our place. He took the punishment we so rightly deserved. “Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness, by whose stripes you were healed” 1 Peter 2:24.
Jesus’ body was then placed in a tomb. But death could not hold Him. On the third day He rose from the dead. Because of His power over death, Jesus will also raise from the grave those who have died in Him, that they might have new heavenly bodies. “But now is Christ risen from the dead” 1 Corinthians 15:20 “We look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our body that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body” Philippians 3:20, 21. Each one of us is born spiritually sick with sin when we enter this world. Only through trusting in Jesus Christ as our Savior can we be healed spiritually from the deadly disease of sin.
Your good works won’t save you. Salvation is a gift from God. “For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast” Ephesians 2:8,9. You must believe in your heart that Jesus is the Son of God Who died on the cross for your sins and rose from the dead. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” Romans 10:9,10. In rising from the dead, Jesus proved He was the Son of God. He took the keys of death and hell from Satan and He now has the power to give everlasting life to all who will believe on Him. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die (spiritual death)” John 11:25,26. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” Romans 6:23. To reject Christ means spending eternity in hell, a place of suffering and torment, separated from God forever. To become a child of God you must be born spiritually into His family. Jesus said, “Verily, verily I say unto you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.. Except a man be born of water (physical birth) and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Marvel not that I said unto you, you must be born again” John 3:3,5,7. There is no other way to be saved from your sin and enter into Heaven after physical death. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” John 14:6. Believing on Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven.
Your new life in Christ
By confessing that you are a sinner and by receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are born again. Jesus comes to live inside of you. His blood washes all your sins away and you are forgiven. You are no longer the same. You have now become God’s child forever. You now belong to God through Jesus Christ. You have become a “new creation.” “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new” 2 Corinthians 5:17.
You have been given the free gift of eternal life. “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life” 1 John 5:13. You now have a new heart, a new life, a new family; the family of God, a new home in heaven a new eternal friend, Jesus Christ, your new Lord and Savior. You are now no longer under the condemnation and wrath of God, but you are clean and righteous before a Holy God. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit” Romans 8:1. Your old sinful nature was nailed to the cross with Christ. You have been given the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ. Now you can come boldly into the presence of God and be assured that He hears your every prayer because you are now holy in His sight. The Holy Spirit has been given to you the moment you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior. He will be your comforter and guide. From this point on you will want to seek to please God in all you do and say. Jesus Christ will make that possible as He lives His life through you by the power of the Holy Spirit. He dwells in your heart and it is He who will help you to obey God, resist temptation and glorify God in your body. Your purpose now is to glorify God in your life and to enjoy Him forever. This happens when you obey His Word, the Bible, and let Christ reign in your heart as Lord.
The Apostle Paul explained how we are to live this new life in Christ when he wrote, “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” Galatians 2:20. You have been set free from the penalty of sin. You are now being set free moment by moment from the power of sin, and some day in heaven you will be free from the very presence of sin.
Your moment of decision
The question is, have you been born again? We have all had a physical birth, but we must have a spiritual birth to become God’s child. Have you had the second birth? Have you received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? If not, today is the day of salvation for you. Jesus Christ is waiting outside the door of your heart, waiting to come in and save you from your sin. He says, “Behold I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him. . . Revelation 3:20 If you want to be born again and become a new creation in Christ, then pray this simple prayer, meaning it sincerely from the bottom of your heart. “Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sin. I believe You died on the cross for me. You took the punishment for my sin. Come into my heart and wash my sins away. I receive You now as my very own Savior. Thank you for dying for me, Lord Jesus.” If you prayed that prayer and meant it with all your heart, Jesus promised He would come in. Now He lives in your heart and He’ll never leave you. “For He hath said, I will never leave you, nor forsake you” Hebrews 13:5 You are now forever His child. Heaven is your guaranteed home, and Jesus is coming back for you some day. Jesus said, “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so I would have told you. I go and prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you unto Myself, that where I am there you may be also” John 14:2,3. From this moment on, your life belongs to Christ. Seek to live for Him. Let Him rule and reign in your heart. Read the Bible daily and spend time in prayer. Obey His Word and seek to tell others about what Jesus Christ has done for you. You are now born again into God’s family. Remember this date as your spiritual birthday.
